The research, published in the journal Environmental Pollution, found that the presence of box-shaped structures on the surface of a field can increase the probability of crop damage by about one third. The study analysed pollen collected from bees in a field in Germany that had been planted with oilseed rape that was not damaged by insect pests. It found that the distribution of pollen from different species did not differ between areas with and without bee boxes. However, the researchers found that bees that visited an oilseed rape crop in an area with bee boxes visited fewer flowers and deposited pollen on fewer plants than bees that visited the same field without boxes. The scientists suggested that bees may have been intimidated by the boxes or that they found the boxes too big and difficult to manoeuvre around. They also suggested that the boxes may have been a source of noise and disturbance for the bees. Andrew Helm, from the University of Nottingham, said: “Although it’s been known that bees visit crops regularly for a range of reasons, it is often difficult to predict whether a given visit is for food or other reasons such as pollination. “In this study, we showed that an insect-proofing box can have a negative impact on plant visitation and consequently crop yield.”Basilica of San Lorenzo, Caltagirone The Basilica of San Lorenzo is a Roman Catholic titular church located in Caltagirone, in the province of Palermo, Sicily, Italy.
